At Worcester State University I have encountered several outstanding educators. Such memorable teachers run the gamut from Dr. Sara Young to Dr. Patrick O'Connor—coming from opposite educational directions, but both fully knowledgeable and humane in their approaches to teaching. However, there is one educator whose style, humanity and clean-heartedness transcends the others, in one of the most difficult arenas of education: Diversity. I am speaking, of course, about Dr. Bernard Reese.
Dr. Reese prepares educators to be excellent.
Sincerely,
Karen Marie Christa Minns, Former Student

Dr. Reese’s contributions to Doherty High School and to the profession of education have been countless therefore, this is the easiest and most difficult letter of recommendation that I have been asked to write for anyone. Dr. Reese has been an instrumental tool for professional development of the faculty members at Doherty High School. Dr. Reese has invested many years into raising students to their highest potential and assisting teachers in helping students achieve that goal. I have worked with Dr. Reese in many different capacities and continue to grow as a professional under his guidance. His vision for education in an urban setting sets the tone at Doherty High School as a school that believes in students regardless of any obstacles they may endure.

The Skillful Teacher Program that Dr. Reese runs for our new teachers has had a great impact on our school. The feedback from the new teachers is extremely positive and the program has been well received by the veteran teachers on staff as well. As I have risen through the ranks to my current position of Department Head of the Social Studies Department at Doherty High School, I can’t tell you how his program has paid dividends to my new staff members. I have seen my new teachers grow and blossom as the year progresses because of the strong reinforcement they are receiving in methodology and pedagogy from Dr. Reese’s program.
Dr. Bernard Reese is a thoughtful, dedicated, honest, efficient, respectful, responsible, competent, diligent, and caring educator. In short, he is all anyone could ever want in a public school administrator. Dr. Reese has shared his knowledge, his expertise and his wisdom on all things educational and in life in general. Dr. Reese is always seeking to impart his love of learning and understanding of the role that education plays in the life of children.

Dr. Reese began his career at Doherty Memorial High School as a teacher of mathematics. His high-energy teaching style motivated students of all learning styles and capabilities to work to the best of their ability. He set standards high, and helped each student strive to reach a personal best. He is well respected by faculty, staff students and parents of the Doherty community. His willingness to share ideas and strategies with co-workers is a bonus for new teachers and veterans alike in the after-school course he facilities every Thursday titled “The Skillful Teacher.”

This outstanding gentleman has a true passion for learning, teaching and performing administrative duties. Completely professional in all his dealing with administration, staff and students, he abides by firm and fair principles at all times and under all circumstances. He truly loves his calling, and constantly strives to better himself in any manner possible. Dr. Reese is the proverbial gentleman and scholar.
I had the privilege of reading and editing Dr. Reese’s manuscript and his story is very profound. Growing up in the ghetto of New York City with his mother and siblings while his father was incarcerated, “Reese,” as we fondly call him, learned from the very start to deal with all the adversities life can cast our way. He literally pulled himself up by the boot straps to build a better life for himself and in doing so, became ardent with regard to improving the lives of others.
As a minister, administrator, author, and former math teacher in inner-city schools, Reese has seen it all and done it all. He is impassioned with the desire to share what he has learned in order to help others find success despite adversity. His heart-felt words of wisdom have helped, inspired and guided myriad teachers, parents and students throughout his tenure as an educator.
